Ternryds utmärkelse 2024
Awards Reception
Based Materials and Timber Structures at Linneaus University in Växjö on september 17th.
including co-supervision of PhD students and the conference series CompWood which is co-organized every second year. This collaboration strengthens the international position of Linnaeus University in both research and education.
Professor Josef Füssl is the head of the research unit in Structural Simulation and Timber Engineering at TU Wien since 2018. He has been an external expert in PhD projects and part of fruitful exchanges between the research unit and Linnaeus University.
The cross-disciplinary approach of the research unit at TU Wien will be beneficial for the broader field of green sustainable development at Linnaeus University. There is a large potential for further collaboration, including exchange of PhD students that are currently under recruitment. This will strengthen the established research groups and allow for a strategic development of newly established research areas at Linnaeus University.
The motivation reads
Professor Josef Eberhardsteiner established the research unit in Structural Simulation and Timber Engineering at TU Wien. He is a distinguished and leading researcher with a long track-record and a high number of highly cited scientific publications.

Ternryds award 2022
Award Reception
Both Professor Stavros Avramidis, recipient of the Carola and Carl-Olof Ternryd Award in 2022, and Professor Heli Peltola, the recipient from 2020, were honored on October 20 during a ceremony at Linnaeus University in Växjö.
His work has resulted in interesting discoveries in the area of cell-wall nanopore configuration and distribution in correlation with molecular modelling of water sorption at those levels. In the area of wood drying, Prof.
Avramidis has been the leading researcher for the last twenty-five years in developing and commercializing radio frequency vacuum (RFV) drying as a high tech alternative drying to kilns for timbers and high quality wood.
The research encompasses proof of concept and the development of a system that requires swift sawmill evaluation systems based on near-infrared spectroscopy. Prof. Avramidis has published more than 200 papers. Given Prof. Avramidis distinguished scientific record, his diverse research portfolio and his international experience, a fruitful and long term collaboration, relevant for several research groups at Linnaeus University, is foreseen.
Recognition by the University of British Columbia
The award was highlighted by the University of British Columbia, as detailed here:
Prof. Avramidis is a distinguished Professor in two distinct, but highly related areas, namely, wood physics and wood drying.
In wood physics, he has been instrumental in the modelling of wood-water relationships under static and dynamic isothermal and nonisothermal conditions.
-
In 2022, Professor Stavros Avramidis, Head of the Department of Wood Science at the Faculty of Forestry, The University of British Columbia (UBC), received the award. It was allocated as 500,000 SEK to the recipient and 500,000 SEK to research collaboration with Linnaeus University.
Ternryds award 2020
Awards Reception
Professor Heli Peltola is awarded the Carola and Carl-Olof Ternryd Prize for her research on the sustainable management of Nordic forest ecosystems in a changing climate. The prize, amounting to 1 million SEK, is shared with the Department of Forest and Wood Technology at Linnaeus University.
Her research employs forest ecosystem models and life cycle assessment tools. Over the past 25 years, she has conducted high-quality research with a substantial number of published articles in top-ranked journals. Her work has a strong connection to teaching and research at the Department of Forest and Wood Technology.
You can view the award ceremony held digitally on November 17, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Researcher in Sustainable Management
Professor Heli Peltola is a leading researcher in the sustainable management of Nordic forest ecosystems under changing climate conditions and the impacts on forest production and risk management. Her research also includes adaptive management strategies and the potential for forests and forestry to mitigate climate change.

In 2020, Professor Heli Peltola received the award, which was distributed as 400,000 SEK to the recipient and 600,000 SEK to research collaboration with Linnaeus University.
Ternryds award 2018
Awards reception
The Ternryd Award, given by the Research Foundation every two years, was presented for the second time in 2018. Linnaeus University received an equal share of 400,000 SEK, which was accepted by Rector Peter Aronsson, to develop a collaboration in timber and construction technology with Dr. Simon Aicher over the coming years.
He is acknowledged as a prime expert for adhesive and bonding issues of wood. Dr Aicher is internationally considered as one of the leading experts regarding standardization, quality management and scientific development in glued structural elements and structural adhesives. He is also well recognized for his work on development of non-destructive testing methods for timber, especially ultrasound burst localization and ultrasound shear-wave reflection methods for detection of glue-line defects.
During his energetic leadership the institute has gained outstanding world-wide recognition in the field of timber engineering. He has moreover initiated, contributed and led numerous national and international research and cooperation works, been awarded patents and authored more than 250 scientific papers.
The motivation reads
Dr Aicher has contributed with significant research in the field of modern timber engineering closely related to activities at Linnaeus University (LnU), in particular building technology using modern engineered wood-based products.
-
800,000 SEK was awarded to a successful researcher in Stuttgart. With great joy and in a formal setting, Professor Dr. Simon Aicher from Stuttgart received 400,000 SEK first at Linnaeus University in Växjö and later in the evening at the Residenset.
